Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock is speaking out against social media scammers who are pretending to be her or her family members. In a statement to PEOPLE, Bullock expressed her concern for the safety of her family and innocent people being taken advantage of by these fake accounts.
The scammers have been using Facebook to create fake profiles of Bullock, including one created by her younger sister Gesine Bullock-Prado. Gesine shared screenshots of the fake accounts on social media, revealing that many people were contacting her through private messages, claiming to have a relationship and asking for thousands of dollars.
Gesine advised her followers to report and block any suspicious accounts, stating that she has had to involve local law enforcement due to these scams. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the company is working to improve its detection and enforcement against scams, including those targeting Bullock.
This issue is not unique to Bullock, as a recent incident in France involved a woman being swindled out of over $800,000 by scammers posing as Brad Pitt. The scammer used AI-generated images and convinced the victim that they were in a romantic relationship.
Bullock’s family members are urging fans to be cautious when interacting with suspicious social media accounts, especially those claiming to be them. By reporting and blocking fake profiles, fans can help prevent these scams from happening to others.
