The 25th annual SantaCon bar crawl event returned to New York City on Saturday, flooding Manhattan streets and subways with festively-dressed partygoers ahead of the holiday season. The event started at Broadway and West 39th Street, wrapping up in the East Village.
SantaCon is an annual event that raises money for charitable causes through ticket sales. Attendees can visit the SantaCon website for more information. However, with large crowds expected, mass transit agencies are taking measures to prevent rowdy behavior.
NJ Transit has prohibited all beverages on its trains, light rail vehicles, and buses on December 14 and 21, coinciding with SantaCon events in New York City and Hoboken, respectively. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority also announced a ban on alcohol consumption on Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains during SantaCon.
The MTA Police Department will have an increased presence at key stations to enforce the weekend alcohol restriction. Officials warn that police may confiscate alcoholic beverages, issue summonses, and even remove violators from trains or stations.
