Santorini, Greece’s top tourist island, has issued a warning due to increased seismic activity in the area. Authorities have advised people to avoid two small ports and refrain from gathering indoors after recent tremors.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has echoed this warning to British tourists in the region. Santorini is known for its stunning whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches, but it was also the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history around 1620 BC.
In recent days, a series of tremors up to a 4.3 magnitude were registered on the island, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. Schools have been forced to close due to the increased activity, and people are advised not to access or remain at specific ports.
The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection has issued guidance warning against large indoor gatherings and advising people to avoid certain areas. The warning comes after a meeting with local officials in January, which detected “mild seismic-volcanic activity” within Santorini’s caldera.
Scientists have reported increased activity along a central fault line in the northern section of Santorini’s caldera, but describe it as mild. Earthquakes measuring between 2.8 and 4.5 struck the area on Sunday morning without causing damage.
