Saquon Barkley Declines Council Invitation from Donald Trump

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has clarified that he declined an invitation to serve on President Donald Trump’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. The clarification came days after Trump signed an executive order reviving the Presidential Fitness Test for students in public schools.

Barkley told reporters on Monday that he was unaware of the council’s purpose and felt overwhelmed with his current schedule, leading him to decline the invitation. He expressed surprise at being mentioned as a potential member but appreciated the opportunity.

The fitness test was first established in the 1960s but ended during former President Barack Obama’s administration. Trump’s executive order aims to end childhood chronic diseases and ensure future generations’ strength, vitality, and excellence.

Barkley previously defended himself against backlash over his initial response to being mentioned as a council member, saying he respects the office and had also played golf with Obama in the past.

This latest move by Trump highlights his focus on sports during his second term. The president has recently signed executive orders for college sports and established task forces for the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics.
