Sarah Palin Defeated in NYT Defamation Lawsuit After Eight Years

A federal jury has ruled against former US Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin in her defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, ending an eight-year legal battle.

The 2017 editorial published by The Times mistakenly linked Palin’s campaign map to a mass shooting and sparked widespread criticism of the Republican vice presidential nominee. Palin claims that the article damaged her reputation and asserts that The Times’ correction was inadequate.

Palin first filed the lawsuit in 2017 after the newspaper corrected its editorial. However, two previous trials resulted in the jury and judge ruling in favor of The Times, which led to a federal appeals court’s decision to invalidate those rulings last year.

The latest verdict follows a retrial that lasted only two hours. Palin stated outside the courtroom that she plans to “get on with life” but declined to comment on potential further action. A representative for The New York Times said the decision confirms the importance of honest mistakes in publishing.
