Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is going to trial for allegedly sealing a “pact of corruption” with late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in exchange for tens of millions of euros. The charges claim that Sarkozy received cash from suitcases to fund his 2007 presidential campaign, and in return, he would help end Gaddafi’s pariah status.
Sarkozy, 69, appeared in court on Monday as part of the trial, confirming his date of birth and current profession. He has been convicted twice before and faces a year-long electronic bracelet starting in April. However, this case is considered the most explosive, with Sarkozy being charged with criminal conspiracy with a foreign government for the first time since World War II.
The trial marks a significant development in Sarkozy’s ongoing investigations, which include two other cases and an investigation into his alleged involvement in corruption.
