Satellite Mega-Constellations Unlock Hidden Climate Data

Scientists have discovered a way to analyze signals from satellite mega-constellations like Starlink, revealing insights into climate, sea levels, and weather patterns. By using the Doppler effect, researchers at Graz University of Technology have found a method to harness previously untapped communication signals for positioning and Earth observation.

The project, Estimation, integrates these signals with data from navigation satellites, aiming to improve tracking environmental changes on Earth with greater precision. Satellite-based Earth observation relies on detecting subtle changes in sea level, groundwater levels, and gravitational field shifts to extract valuable data about our planet.

The team detected constant tones within the Starlink signal and utilized the Doppler effect to determine position accuracy of 54 meters. While this is not yet satisfactory for geodetic applications, further research aims to improve precision to a few meters by using antennas that can track satellites or receive signals from different directions.

This breakthrough reveals enormous potential for detailed investigation and measurement of our Earth’s changes. With improved precision, scientists can better understand the impact of climate change, weather phenomena, and other environmental factors on our planet.
