Saudi Arabia has welcomed its first official visit from a Syrian foreign minister since Bashar al-Assad’s ouster, as part of efforts to reset bilateral relations. Assaad al-Shibani, Syria’s new foreign minister, arrived in the kingdom on Wednesday and expressed hope for a “new, bright page” in relations.
The visit comes amid Saudi concerns over the trafficking of captagon, a highly addictive narcotic produced under the Assad regime. Riyadh has become a major market for the drug, which was Syria’s most valuable export before Assad’s ouster.
Syria’s new leaders are focused on rebuilding their war-shattered country, while Saudi Arabia seeks to expand its influence in the region. The two countries have had a complex history, with Saudi Arabia severing ties with Assad’s government in 2012 and later restoring relations last year.
