Savannah Chefs Shine in James Beard Awards Semifinals

Two Savannah-area establishments recently earned recognition from the James Beard Foundation, a prestigious award for independent restaurants and bars. Lone Wolf Lounge, located at 2429 Lincoln St., was named a semifinalist in the Outstanding Bar category. The wood-paneled bar offers a neighborhood-friendly vibe blending Caribbean and Midwest flavors. Meanwhile, Common Thread, part of the FARM Hospitality Group, earned Best Chef: Southeast honors alongside Brandon Carter and Joseph Harrison. Common Thread, which opened in 2021 in a historic building on Abercorn and 37th Street, is known for its seasonal, four-course menus highlighting coastal Georgia and South Carolina ingredients like oysters from local waters.

Lone Wolf Lounge has also been recognized as an All-Day-Into-Night destination, offering something for both casual diners and those willing to drive for a laid-back experience. The restaurant’s commitment to its community is evident through collaborations with artists, musicians, and chefs, creating unique events that showcase the area’s culinary talent.

In addition to Common Thread, Savannah-area chefs Elizabeth Terry and her husband Michael won Best Chef: Southeast in 1995. Back in the Day Bakery was a semifinalist in 2015, and co-owner-baker Cheryl Day earned a cookbook award in 2022. Amy Bailey claimed Best Chef: Southeast in 2019 alongside others.

The James Beard Awards celebrate excellence across all dining experiences, from fine dining to casual spots. The foundation honors culinary arts inspired by late chef James Beard. This year, Lone Wolf and Common Thread will learn if they’ve been shortlisted as nominees. The awards ceremony will take place in Chicago on June 16.

Savannah’s growing reputation for food and hospitality is set to continue as these chefs and establishments strive to innovate and serve exceptional experiences.
