SC Leads US in Flu Rates with High Activity Levels

South Carolina has one of the highest flu rates in the country, according to the latest health reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The state’s influenza activity levels are considered very high, ranking only six other states with similar ratings. In fact, flu cases have increased significantly over the past week, with 3,061 lab-confirmed tests reported between December 29 and January 4.

The data shows that flu-like illness accounts for a higher percentage of patient visits to healthcare providers in South Carolina than in most other states. Additionally, hospitalizations and deaths due to the flu are also on the rise. As of the latest report, there have been over 10,500 lab-confirmed tests this season, with more cases expected as the flu season typically peaks between December and February.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get an annual flu shot to protect themselves from the virus. The good news is that vaccines are widely available at healthcare provider offices, pharmacies, and local health department clinics. By getting vaccinated, individuals can reduce their risk of contracting the flu and help prevent outbreaks in their communities.

The state’s most affected areas include Anderson, Oconee, Greenville, Spartanburg, York, and several surrounding counties, where flu activity is considered widespread geographically. While the situation is concerning, taking proactive steps such as getting vaccinated can help mitigate its impact.
