Scarlett Johansson Directs and Stars at Cannes Film Festival

Oscar-winning actress Scarlett Johansson is set to make two appearances at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, both on-screen and behind the camera. She will star alongside Benicio Del Toro and Tom Hanks in Wes Anderson’s new project, The Phoenician Scheme, while also making her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great.

The film follows an elderly woman coping with the death of her best friend and explores themes of grief and loss. Johansson has entered the film into the second prize category, competing for the main Palme d’Or award.

Cannes president Iris Knobloch emphasized the festival’s commitment to showcasing work from female filmmakers, with six films from female directors competing for the top prize. Other notable contenders include Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind and Ari Aster’s Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone.

Robert De Niro will receive an honorary Palme d’Or, while Tom Cruise’s final Mission: Impossible installment will also be screened. Harris Dickinson, a newcomer to directing, will show his film Urchin about a homeless man in London at the festival.
