Scenic Cruising, a retail brand created by Jim Gibson, is paying tribute to San Francisco’s outdoor spaces with artworks inspired by the 49 Mile Scenic Drive. The collection features illustrations of iconic parks like Mission Dolores Park, Lands End, and Buena Vista Park, as well as nods to the city’s cruising culture.
Gibson, founder of retail brand Galad Consulting, launched Scenic Cruising after seeing a drop in business due to the Trump administration’s efforts to strip federal funding from LGBTQ nonprofits. He found solace in combining his love for art, outdoors, and travel into one pursuit.
The artworks are designed to be humorous and cheeky, with images that evoke nostalgia and charm. Gibson’s depiction of Marshall’s Beach has been a bestseller, capturing the essence of San Francisco’s tourist merchandise. The brand’s merchandise includes tank tops, tees, posters, and calendars featuring beautiful images of San Francisco locations.
Gibson believes his concept resonates with people who know the hidden meaning behind it. He said, “I think people love that it does celebrate something that seems to be kept in the shadows or not talked about.” The brand’s positive reception has been overwhelming, with attendees sharing memories and stories about their favorite cruising spots.
Gibson is scheduled to leave for a research trip in Los Angeles to inspire his second collection, which he expects to release in the spring. Despite challenges due to Trump’s tariffs on overseas goods, Gibson remains optimistic and encourages customers to order early to guarantee Christmas delivery dates.
