Scheels, a North Dakota-based sporting goods retailer, has signed a lease for its new location at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa. The company plans to open the 210,000-square-foot store in spring 2027 after a full renovation of the former Boston Store space.
The Mayfair store will be nearly double the size of Scheels’ other Wisconsin locations, including Appleton and Eau Claire. The retailer is known for its destination stores, which feature attractions such as a candy shop, arcade, cafe, golf club fittings, and bike mechanic services.
Scheels CEO Matt Hanson said Wauwatosa is the perfect fit for the company’s next location, citing the city’s success in attracting retailers like Appleton and Eau Claire. The new store is expected to employ over 500 people, with most being local employee-owners hired directly by the retailer.
Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride praised Scheels’ choice of Mayfair Mall as a key economic boost for the region. “Scheels’ investment strengthens our local economy and creates new opportunities for businesses and residents across southeastern Wisconsin,” he said.
The new store is part of a broader redevelopment plan for Mayfair’s southern end, which includes up to 900 apartment units and additional retail space in four towers.
