Scientists at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory have made a major breakthrough in developing a nuclear fusion reactor, which could provide virtually unlimited clean energy. The laboratory, run by the US Department of Energy, has successfully created the first quadrant of a super-powerful magnet for its National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U) reactor.
The development is a significant step towards creating a nuclear fusion reactor that would harness the power of atomic collisions to generate energy, similar to the process that powers the sun. In contrast to existing nuclear reactors, which use nuclear fission, this new technology has the potential to provide clean and renewable energy with virtually no waste or emissions.
While commercialization of a fully functional nuclear fusion reactor remains elusive, this achievement brings the dream closer to reality.
