Scientists Claim Discovery of New Colour ‘Olo’

Researchers have discovered a new colour called “olo”, which was witnessed by participants in an experiment where laser pulses stimulated specific cells in the retina. The study, published in Science Advances, used a device called Oz to direct the laser beam into the pupil of each participant’s eye. The results show that the participants saw a blue-green colour, unlike any seen before, which is considered “more saturated” than existing colours.

The experiment involved shining a laser beam onto one eye of five participants with normal colour vision, including co-author Prof Ren Ng from the University of California. The team believes this discovery could potentially aid research into colour blindness, where people struggle to distinguish between certain colours.

While some experts consider the existence of olo open to argument, others see it as a “technological feat” that could lead to new insights. However, the study’s findings also raise questions about the interpretation of the colour and how it may be perceived in different contexts.
