Scientists Discover Magnetic Switchback Near Earth for First Time

NASA has detected the first magnetic switchback near Earth, a phenomenon observed only in our solar system’s edge. A team led by E.O. McDougall at the University of New Hampshire used NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS) to capture the twist. This discovery helps scientists study reconnection in space plasmas and understand how it affects energy movement into Earth’s upper atmosphere, which can impact technology and astronauts.
