Scientists Warn of ‘Mirror Life’ Threats to Humans and Environment

Scientists have sounded an alarm about the potential risks of “mirror life”, organisms composed of molecules that are mirror images of those found in nature. While researchers have already created synthetic biological systems with these properties, experts warn they could pose unprecedented threats to humans, animals, and the environment.

The concern is that mirror bacteria could evade natural immune defenses, infecting host organisms and replicating unchecked. This could lead to a rapid spread of invasive species across many ecosystems, potentially exposing human, animal, and plant populations to lethal infections.

The international group of 38 researchers emphasizes the need for caution, calling for a ban on creating mirror bacteria unless compelling evidence emerges that they do not pose extraordinary dangers. They also urge funding organizations to prioritize biosecurity and ensure those attempting to create “mirror life” face significant scientific, financial, and time-consuming hurdles.

This warning comes as lawmakers in the US unveil legislation to keep the government funded until March 14, amidst a mad dash to pass the bill by the end of the week.
