Scottie Scheffler won his second major title of the year, dominating the competition at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The 29-year-old Texan carded a 68 on Sunday to secure a four-stroke victory, finishing at 17-under 267.
Scheffler’s performance was not surprising, as he had been on a dominant run for over two years. He has won 20 times worldwide since February 2022 and has turned 54-hole leads into victories 11 times in a row.
The American golfer’s win marked another milestone in his career, as he became just the fourth player in Open Championship history to shoot 68 or better in all four rounds. He also tied with Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods as one of the few golfers to win multiple majors by four or more strokes in a single year.
Scheffler’s caddie-less second-place finisher, Harris English, secured his second runner-up finish at a major this year, while Chris Gotterup made headlines after earning over $2.7 million in just eight days and securing his first major debut with a third-place finish.
The win was Scheffler’s 11th straight victory from a 54-hole lead, and he attributed his success to hard work and patience. He praised the competition, calling it “tough” but noting that he thrives on competition.
Scheffler’s family, including wife Meredith and 15-month-old son Bennett, were in attendance and provided emotional support for the golfer. Despite a stumble on Sunday, Scheffler remained composed, even when his young son face-planted while trying to walk up the slope to meet him.
