The Seattle Seahawks suffered a tough loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, falling 30-13 and ending their four-game winning streak. In the third quarter, quarterback Geno Smith suffered a severe knee injury that left him unable to continue playing.
Coach Mike Macdonald described Smith’s injury as “severe enough for him not to come back in the game.” While structurally, it appears the knee is okay, further testing will be needed to determine the extent of the damage. Macdonald stated that it’s too early to predict whether Smith will miss any games going forward.
With Smith sidelined, backup quarterback Sam Howell struggled to contend with the Packers’ pass rush, completing only 5 of 14 passes for 24 yards and an interception. The Seahawks will need to assess Howell’s performance and make adjustments to move forward.
The team’s faith in Howell remains high, but he acknowledged that he fell short in his performance. He expressed confidence in himself and the team’s ability to bounce back from tough situations.
In other injury news, center Olu Oluwatimi was lost to a quadriceps and knee injury, while starting running back Kenneth Walker III sat out for the second consecutive game due to a calf injury. The status of Walker’s injury will be reassessed in the coming days.
The Seahawks’ loss marked a difficult test for the team as they navigated without one of their key leaders. As coach Macdonald noted, “Geno is the heartbeat of the offense, the heartbeat of the team.”
