Sean Baker’s “Anora” Takes Top Honors at Director Awards

Oscar season is heating up, with comedy film “Anora” emerging as a front-runner. The Sean Baker-directed movie took top honors at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Producers Guild of America (PGA) awards, marking a significant milestone in its already impressive winning streak.

Since 2009, when both organizations expanded their best-film nominee list to five, the PGA winner has gone on to claim the best-picture Oscar almost every time. This is the latest victory for “Anora,” which had previously lost all its nominations at the Golden Globes.

Baker appeared visibly surprised and even joked about his impostor syndrome during his acceptance speech at the DGA ceremony. Despite this, he should feel reassured that 18 out of the last 20 DGA winners also took home the best-director Oscar.

Other notable winners include “Shogun” (drama-series), “Hacks” (comedy-series), and “Nickel Boys” director RaMell Ross (first-time theatrical filmmaker). However, not everyone is celebrating: film “Emilia PĂ©rez,” which led the Oscar field with 13 nominations, failed to take a prize at either ceremony due to controversy surrounding its star’s past tweets.
