Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay says the team is trying to balance short-term and long-term roster decisions by letting quarterback Matthew Stafford gauge his value. McVay confirmed that Stafford’s agent has permission to speak to other teams about his market value.
Stafford, 37, completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season. He has two years left on his contract, with $4 million guaranteed in 2025 and none in 2026. The Rams are considering trading him due to his relatively low salary compared to other starting quarterbacks.
McVay acknowledged that there’s “no dispute” about Stafford being the team’s quarterback, but emphasized the need for the franchise to make an educated decision on its direction. He said letting Stafford’s agent talk to other teams will help them explore options and understand what the future looks like without him.
The Rams have a record-breaking contract extension with wide receiver Cooper Kupp, worth $80.1 million over three years. However, they plan to trade Kupp after eight seasons, citing a “responsibility to the collective” as they assemble their 2025 roster. McVay called Kupp an “all-time Ram” and praised his influence on the team and his life.
