The Los Angeles Rams are seeking to re-sign quarterback Matthew Stafford, but the team’s desire to keep him at quarterback comes with a complicated contract hurdle.
Stafford, who is currently due for $27 million this year, has been granted permission to explore other teams. Recently, coach Sean McVay acknowledged that the two sides had begun discussing alternative options after disagreement on Stafford’s 2025 contract value.
Despite the Rams’ desire to keep Stafford at quarterback, McVay clarified that the team wants him to continue leading the way. However, he noted that they face a challenge in finding a suitable long-term deal.
“We want him to be our quarterback,” McVay said. “But we have to figure out what that looks like, both short-term and long-term.”
The Rams’ offer falls below market rate, which is currently $60 million per year. Stafford’s desire for more lucrative compensation has led the team to allow him to explore other opportunities. If another team offers a more attractive package, including substantial trade compensation, it could impact the Rams’ chances of retaining their quarterback.
For now, there are no immediate plans for a re-signing, but McVay indicated that the door remains open for negotiations.
