Mexican authorities have been criticized by grieving mothers, who claim that they are doing too little to find missing US mother Nancy Guthrie. The group, the Searching Mothers of Sonora, has taken matters into their own hands and scoured the desert in search of clues about her disappearance.
The 84-year-old mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie went missing on February 1. Her family has offered a $1 million private award for information leading to her safe return. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has tried to calm the situation, asking volunteer searchers to back off and let professionals handle the investigation.
However, many mothers who have lost loved ones to violence in Mexico have expressed frustration with authorities’ lack of action. They claim that their searches are not interfering with the official investigation but rather filling a gap left by inadequate police work.
The Searching Mothers have found success in other cases, including locating hundreds of bodies of victims of drug and gang violence. Their leader, Lidia Hernandez, said she believes that her group can find Guthrie’s remains, which would bring closure to both families.
Mexican authorities do not believe Guthrie has been taken across the border, but the mothers are determined to continue their search. They say they will keep looking as long as Guthrie’s disappearance remains unsolved.
