SEC Coaches Favor Expanding Schedule with Big Ten Opponents

SEC coaches are divided on expanding the conference schedule to include nonconference games against Big Ten opponents. LSU head coach Brian Kelly stated that while his team would be willing to play a Big Ten opponent, they need a partner to make it happen.

Kelly believes competing against the Big Ten would help the SEC and its teams improve. He mentioned that winning national championships is crucial for the conference’s image. However, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey expressed concerns about mandating nine conference games with an added nonconference opponent.

Coaches such as Sam Pittman from Arkansas and Shane Beamer from South Carolina are open to exploring new scheduling options, but prioritize rivalries and in-state games over other opportunities. Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz stated that the Big Ten’s recent success has caught the SEC’s attention, and he hopes his team can regain its competitive edge.

The decision on expanding the conference schedule remains uncertain, with some coaches advocating for a partnership between the SEC and Big Ten.
