SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Outlines Key Priorities for Crypto Task Force

US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Hester Peirce has outlined 10 key priorities for the newly-created Crypto Task Force, aimed at providing regulatory clarity for the crypto industry. The task force, led by Peirce, is working to create a more “viable” path to registration and resolve questions on what constitutes a security or commodity in crypto.

Peirce’s statement emphasized that the SEC’s primary objective – protecting investors – remains unchanged. She acknowledged the challenges posed by former Chair Gary Gensler’s regulation-by-enforcement approach, which has been criticized for its complexity and lack of clarity.

The Crypto Task Force is expected to take time to address these issues, with Peirce urging companies and market participants to be patient as the agency works to “disentangle” itself from ongoing litigation. The task force will focus on providing antifraud protections and referrals to sister regulators when necessary.

Peirce compared the agency’s history of crypto regulation to a family road trip, suggesting that the new approach should be more enjoyable and less risky. She noted that the commission will need to cooperate with other regulators to achieve a clear regulatory framework.

The SEC has already made significant moves in this direction, rescinding its controversial Staff Accounting Bulletin 121, which was hailed as a milestone by Peirce. The task force’s priorities include providing clarity on crypto-lending and staking programs, determining jurisdictional boundaries, and creating a more efficient registration process.
