The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has appointed a former big-law crypto lawyer as chief counsel to its newly created Crypto Task Force. Mike Selig, who was previously a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, will lead the task force in overseeing regulatory issues related to cryptocurrencies.
Selig’s appointment comes with experience working on crypto-related matters for both the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). His selection is seen as significant, given his background and expertise in the field. Other notable additions to the task force include Veronica Reynolds, a former attorney at Baker Hostetler LLP focused on NFTs and metaverse-related legal issues, and Landon Zinda, a former policy director at crypto think tank Coin Center.
Commissioner Hester Peirce, leader of the task force, welcomed the new appointments, stating that they bring “deep expertise” to addressing complex crypto regulatory problems. The task force aims to work with stakeholders and the public to develop practical solutions for the industry. Upcoming events include a roundtable discussion on March 21, where experts will explore how the SEC defines security in cryptocurrency regulations.
Selig’s appointment is seen as an important step towards creating a more innovative regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies. His experience and expertise will be crucial in shaping the task force’s approach to crypto regulation.
