SEC Forms Crypto Task Force to Clarify Regulatory Path

SEC Acting Chairman Mark T. Uyeda has launched a crypto task force to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto assets. Commissioner Hester Peirce will lead the task force, which aims to provide clarity on who must register and create practical solutions for those seeking registration.

The task force’s focus is to draw clear regulatory lines, craft sensible disclosure frameworks, and deploy enforcement resources judiciously. It will operate within the statutory framework provided by Congress and coordinate with federal departments and agencies, including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Uyeda and Commissioner Peirce emphasize the need for public input from a wide range of stakeholders to foster a regulatory environment that protects investors, facilitates capital formation, and supports innovation. The task force welcomes public input at [email protected] and plans to hold roundtables in the future.

The current SEC approach has been criticized for being too reactive and relying on enforcement actions to regulate crypto retroactively. The task force seeks to change this by providing a clear and sensible regulatory path that respects the bounds of the law.
