Second Wave of Cyber Attacks Expected for Gmail Users

Google has warned that a second wave of cyber attacks targeting Gmail users is incoming, with specific threats identified as email extortion scams, invoice scams, and celebrity impersonation scams. The company’s senior director of product management, Andy Wen, explained that despite a 35% decrease in phishing attacks during the holiday season, “attackers are very persistent” and are gearing up for another wave.

Google’s AI-powered defenses have blocked over 99.9% of spam, phishing, and malware in Gmail, with millions more unwanted messages blocked before reaching inboxes. However, Wen warned that users should remain vigilant, particularly as the holiday season draws to a close.

The three types of scams to watch out for include:

– Gmail Extortion Scams: sending emails with details of the victim’s home address, often including threats of physical harm or releasing damaging personal material.
– Gmail Invoice Scams: fake invoices sent with the intent to trick recipients into disputing charges over the phone.
– Gmail Celebrity Scams: brand impersonation scams targeting famous individuals.

To mitigate these attacks, Google recommends taking your time to think before responding to emails, doing research on the sender and email details, not sending personal information or payment, and reporting suspicious messages as spam. By being vigilant and following these tips, Gmail users can reduce their risk of falling victim to these cyber threats.
