A government-funded study suggests that consuming large amounts of seed oils may be fueling the surge of colon cancers in young Americans. The research analyzed tumor samples from 81 patients with colon cancer and found high levels of bioactive lipids, which promote inflammation and can lead to cancer growth.
The study’s authors argue that people should swap seed oils for healthier fats like olive and avocado oil. However, America’s main cancer and heart disease bodies say there is no evidence that moderate amounts of seed oils contribute to those conditions.
The study comes as rates of colon cancer have surged in young Americans, with diagnoses among people under 50 years old expected to rise by 90% between 2010 and 2030. Researchers believe that ultraprocessed foods containing fats, sugars, and chemicals may play a role in this trend.
While the American Heart Association suggests there is no reason to avoid seed oils in moderation, the study’s authors say Americans consume too many of them. The average American consumes almost 100 pounds of seed oils per year, up about 1,000-fold compared to the 1950s.
The researchers suggest that treatment focused on resolving inflammation with unprocessed healthy fats could help restore the body’s healing mechanisms and potentially revolutionize cancer treatment.
