Sega Weighs In on Video Game Subscription Services

Sega is considering joining the growing video game subscription market, following in the footsteps of Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, EA Play, Ubisoft+, and Nintendo Switch Online. According to company president Shuji Utsumi, these services “are very interesting” and Sega is evaluating opportunities.

The Japanese publisher has a strong lineup of games across various franchises, including Persona, Yakuza, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Total War. However, with the number of subscription services on the rise, concerns have been raised about over-saturation. Can consumers handle multiple monthly subscriptions for access to hundreds of games?

Utsumi believes Sega’s strengths, including its RPG group and iconic IPs, make it well-suited for a subscription service. He aims to “really shine again” with the right strategy.

As the market continues to evolve, Sega will likely need to carefully balance its approach to avoid overwhelming consumers. With a vast library of games at its disposal, the question remains: is too many subscriptions already too much?
