Selena Gomez Defends Spanish Accent Amid Eugenio Derbez’s Criticism

Selena Gomez has responded to criticism from Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez regarding her accent in the Netflix film Emilia Perez. Gomez, who plays a role that requires speaking Spanish, faced backlash after Derbez described her accent as “indefensible” on a podcast.

Derbez argued that non-Spanish-speaking audiences might not fully grasp the flaws in Gomez’s acting due to relying on subtitles. However, Gomez has defended herself by saying she did her best with the time she had. She emphasized that her performance and hard work should not be diminished by criticism over her accent.

Despite Derbez’s initial criticism, he later expressed his admiration for the film and shared a photo of himself at its screening during the New York Film Festival. Gomez has also moved forward, using the opportunity to promote her work and connect with fans.
