Selena Gomez has defended herself against a Republican politician who suggested she should be deported after sharing an emotional video reacting to President Donald Trump’s recent immigration crackdown. Sam Parker, a 2018 Senate candidate from Utah, wrote “Deport Selena Gomez” on his personal account.
In response, Gomez posted on Instagram, saying “Oh, Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.” She also shared a video where she expressed sympathy for people affected by immigration crackdowns, using the Mexican flag emoji. Gomez has been an outspoken advocate for immigration reform, citing her own family’s experiences with undocumented status.
In October 2019, Gomez wrote an op-ed for Time, sharing her personal story of being born in Texas to immigrant parents. She highlighted how her family’s journey was not representative of others’ experiences, but still resonated deeply with her due to the country she calls home. Gomez expressed fear for those in similar situations and for her own country.
The recent deportations have sparked widespread concern, with 1.5 million deportations executed during former President Joe Biden’s first four years in office. The latest immigration crackdown saw 956 people arrested nationwide, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
