Selena Gomez recently spoke out about the controversy surrounding her Oscar-nominated movie, “Emilia Pérez,” at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The film’s lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, faced backlash for old tweets expressing controversial views on Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity.
Gomez distanced herself from Gascón, stating that some of the magic had been lost due to the controversy. However, she chose to remain proud of her work in the film. Gomez also clarified a tweet that seemed to target her, saying it was not written by her.
Despite the criticism, Gomez expressed gratitude for the experience and credits director Jacques Audiard with trusting her talent. She hopes this marks a new beginning for herself in the acting field.
Gomez, who received BAFTA and Golden Globe nods for her performance but did not receive an Oscar nomination, hinted that she may be retiring from music to focus on acting full-time.
