The Laken Riley Act has advanced in the Senate, clearing a second procedural hurdle with an 82-10 vote to proceed to debate. The bill would mandate federal detention of immigrants accused of theft and burglary, pending trial.
Democratic senators have expressed support for amendments, with some arguing that the bill needs “fixing” due to concerns over state attorney general power and detainment requirements. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is hopeful that Republicans will allow debate on amendments, aiming for a “robust debate” and bipartisan cooperation.
At least seven Democrats have indicated they would vote for the bill in its current form, but some have reservations. A Republican amendment push could sway undecided senators, potentially securing the necessary votes for passage. With a newly sworn-in 53-47 majority, Senate Republicans will rely on bipartisan support to pass the legislation.
