Senate Passes E-Bike Battery Safety Bill

A new law in the US Senate budget package aims to curb sales of untested, unsafe lithium-ion batteries powering e-bikes and similar devices. The bill, previously approved by the House in May, was held up due to Sen. Ted Cruz’s opposition, but is now on its way to becoming law.

Since 2019, fires caused by these batteries have resulted in over 900 incidents, injuring nearly 500 people and claiming 33 lives as of September. New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker welcomed the expected enactment, calling it “incredible news” that would protect consumers and firefighters.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer championed the bill’s approval, citing the need for action to prevent further losses due to China-made lithium-ion batteries. The bill requires batteries for sale to be certified as safe by recognized safety labs, a move sponsored last year by U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres. The Senate passed the budget bill on Tuesday, which is expected to be ratified by Friday.

“This bill will ensure lithium-ion batteries and e-mobility products are safer for American consumers,” Torres stated.
