Senate Republicans have launched a hearing into Joe Biden’s mental fitness during his presidency, with three witnesses testifying on Wednesday. The committee aimed to “shine a light” on events in the White House during Biden’s time in office.
The hearing was boycotted by Democrats, who criticized Republicans for “armchair diagnosing” Biden without addressing more pressing issues. However, the Oversight Committee has subpoenaed several former staff members and Biden’s doctor to testify at a June 27 hearing about potential cover-ups of cognitive decline.
Questions surrounding Biden’s age and mental fitness began last summer after his performance in a debate against Donald Trump. The inquiry has continued despite Trump’s recent claims that Biden administration officials forged the former president’s signature and took sweeping actions without his knowledge.
Despite this, most Democrats have refused to participate, choosing instead to focus on other critical challenges facing the nation. Republicans argue that accountability for Biden’s presidency is crucial, while Democrats see it as an attempt to undermine the current administration.
The hearing features testimony from three witnesses: former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, former White House official Theodore Wold, and University of Virginia law professor John Harrison. The focus was on alleged use of an autopen by the Biden White House, with Trump claiming its use casts doubt on the validity of presidential documents.
However, the hearing marks just the beginning of what could be several congressional inquiries into Biden’s presidency in the coming months.
