Senegal Joins NASA’s Artemis Accords as 56th Member

Senegal has formally signed the US-led Artemis Accords, becoming the 56th member of this space exploration framework. The signing ceremony took place on July 24, 2025, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., marking a significant moment for West Africa’s commitment to science, technology, and space diplomacy.

The event brought together key figures from Senegal and NASA, including the ambassador, Director-General of the Senegalese Space Agency, and other important officials. The signing demonstrates the close ties between Senegal and the US, with President Faye and President Trump meeting prior to the ceremony.

Maram KairĂ©, Director-General of the ASES, stated that Senegal’s adherence to the Artemis Accords reflects its commitment to a multilateral approach to space exploration. This move signifies Senegal’s intention to build its own space capabilities and participate in global space governance.

The signing marks Africa’s growing engagement in determining global space policy, with Senegal joining other African countries such as Nigeria, Rwanda, and Angola in the Artemis Accords. The accords aim to foster cooperation and transparency among countries involved in lunar and deep space missions, aligning with international standards for space activities like resource utilization and preservation of lunar heritage sites.

Senegal’s participation in the Artemis Accords highlights its desire to use space technology for development purposes, including climate monitoring, agriculture, and national security. The move is part of a growing trend among new space operators seeking to engage in various international frameworks, as seen with China’s International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) program.
