Sephora Closes Laurel Heights Store in San Francisco Neighborhood

Beauty retailer Sephora has closed its store at 3407 California St. in San Francisco’s Laurel Village shopping center, nearly a year after leaving the beleaguered San Francisco Centre mall downtown. The decision marks another setback for the company as it tests smaller retail prototypes with similar services.

According to UrbanGroup real estate agent Louis Cornejo, the 2,600-square-foot space has been on the market since “a couple of weeks” and is still leasing out for $28,600 a month. Sephora initially opened at this location in 1999 but switched to the Studio concept in 2019 as part of its expansion.

The store was one of five Sephora Studios launched across the US, with Laurel Village being the most successful before its closure. Despite initial optimism, the company ultimately decided not to expand the concept further due to limitations on product offerings.

Sephora now operates four stores in San Francisco: Powell Street, Union Street, Stonestown Galleria, and Embarcadero Center.
