Serbian officials have denied using a military-grade sonic weapon to disperse protesters at a recent anti-government rally in Belgrade. The claim, made by opposition officials and human rights groups, says the device was used to scare and incapacitate people during the event. Serbia has confirmed it possesses such technology but denies its use.
Thousands of people gathered for the rally, part of a nationwide protest movement sparked by a train station collapse that killed 15 people in November. The incident has fueled accusations of government corruption, negligence, and disregard for safety regulations.
Eyewitnesses reported experiencing a sudden whooshing sound during the 15-minute silence, triggering panic and brief stampedes. Those exposed to the device experience sharp ear pain, disorientation, and panic. Prolonged exposure can cause eardrum ruptures and irreversible hearing damage.
The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy has condemned the alleged use of prohibited acoustic devices against protesters as an “unlawful and inhumane” act. Serbian police and the defense ministry have denied the claims, with President Aleksandar Vucic urging authorities to investigate and prosecute those who spread false information about the incident.
