Serbia Protests: Vucic’s Regime Faces Growing Unrest Amid Corruption Scandal

A devastating train station collapse in Novi Sad has sparked widespread protests in Serbia, with demonstrators demanding answers about the government’s handling of a major reconstruction project. The incident, which killed 15 people, has become a rallying cry for anti-corruption protests that have been simmering for years.

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic has long been criticized for his authoritarian style of governance, and this latest scandal has brought the country to a standstill. Protests, led by students and farmers, have turned into near-daily demonstrations, with calls for greater transparency and accountability from the government.

Analysts say Vucic’s regime is “leaning towards a criminal, corrupt state” due to its close ties with Russia and China. The protests, however, represent a new challenge for the president, as they are largely free of traditional opposition slogans and have drawn in broad sections of society.

Experts warn that Vucic’s attempts to contain the protests by making concessions or ridiculing them may not work this time. “The fear factor is gone,” said one analyst, as judges and ordinary citizens have begun to show public support for the demonstrations.

With the government facing mounting pressure, it remains unclear what can break the deadlock. However, some experts say that the protests could be a turning point in Serbia’s history, marking a shift away from a cult of personality towards greater democracy and accountability.
