Sesame Workshop Lays Off Staff Amid Uncertain Future for Sesame Street

The Sesame Workshop has laid off staff as the nonprofit searches for a new home for its flagship show Sesame Street. Warner Bros. Discovery declined to renew the show’s output deal, leaving the finances of the organization uncertain. Despite this, production on season 56 is set to begin next month and will feature an entirely new format with two longer narrative-driven segments and an animated series.

Sesame Workshop CEO Sherrie Westin and COO Joseph Giraldi are leading efforts to secure a distribution deal for the show. The organization has not yet announced a new home for Sesame Street, but it has promised to adapt its content to appeal to modern families. With significant changes on the horizon, including a drop in the magazine-style format and an introduction of a new animated series, Sesame Workshop is poised to continue delivering on its mission despite the challenges ahead.
