At least seven people have been killed after two Russian bridges collapsed, causing train derailments in western Russia. The blasts occurred overnight on Saturday, with one bridge collapsing onto a passenger train in the Bryansk region, killing its driver among others. A second bridge collapse, also in the nearby Kursk region, derailed a freight train and threw it off its rails.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into the incidents as potential acts of terrorism. The agency initially stated that explosions caused the collapses but later removed this phrase from their statement without explanation. Inspectors found damage to railway tracks in the Bryansk region, but the extent of the damage is unclear.
In related news, Ukraine’s military intelligence reported a separate incident involving a Russian freight train carrying food and fuel being blown up on its way to Crimea. This attack has targeted Moscow’s key artery connecting the occupied Zaporizhzhia region and Crimea.
