The owner of a historic building in Manhattan’s West Village is seeking permission to install a gate over its stoop due to repeated incidents of fans trespassing and damaging the property. Barbara Lorber, who has owned the Perry Street building since 1978, says she doesn’t mind people taking pictures or standing on the sidewalk, but some individuals have tried to enter the building without permission. She has also experienced vandalism, including graffiti on the door and stoop.
Lorber is seeking a solution that would allow her to protect her property while still maintaining its historic charm. The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved her request for a gate, with conditions to simplify the design.
Neighbors who live on Perry Street have expressed support for the gate, citing concerns about safety and personal property. This is not an isolated incident, as there has been a recent uptick in requests from homeowners seeking similar solutions due to feelings of unease in the city.
