The owner of 66 Perry St., the exterior of Carrie Bradshaw’s fictional apartment, is asking the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission for permission to install a steel and cast iron gate at the base of the brownstone’s steps. The building is in the Greenwich Village Historic District, requiring any changes to be approved as keeping with the neighborhood’s historic character.
The owner cited an “endless parade” of tourists, influencers, and content creators who have been disrupting the block for over a decade. Many fans come up to her door to take pictures or make videos, causing problems such as graffiti and trespassing. The owner blames herself for bringing this issue to the neighborhood, recalling a situation where she may have tempted a young location scout from NYU Film School with promises of securing his first job in the industry.
A former location scout on early seasons of “Sex and the City” expressed sympathy for the owner’s plight, noting that some sites made famous by the show had positive results. However, the owner’s request to install an iron gate at 66 Perry St. is set to be discussed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission next Tuesday.
