Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued his dominance in the NBA with a 50-point performance to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a convincing 140-109 win over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who became just the ninth player in league history to score three 50-point games in their last seven outings, played with ease against the Suns’ defense. He showcased his skills by scoring sharp drives to the rim and outsmarting defenders with his moves.
“We were cooking,” said head coach Mark Daigneault of Gilgeous-Alexander’s performance. “He was electric from the opening tip-off.”
Gilgeous-Alexander’s supporting cast struggled early, but he carried the team on his back, as is often the case when he takes the court. The 26-year-old guard recorded eight rebounds in addition to his impressive scoring total.
Another key performer for the Thunder was veteran guard Alex Caruso, who returned from injury and stifled Devin Booker with a masterful performance. Caruso limited Booker to just 19 points on 3-for-9 shooting from the field.
The Thunder’s defense also came alive in the second half, holding the Suns to just one shot attempt in 13 tries. The team forced 22 turnovers, which they converted into 23 points off turnovers.
Despite the win, OKC remains focused on winning amid historic trade deadline moves that shook up the league earlier in the week. “Winning solves everything,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after the game. “As long as we continue to plug away at winning basketball games, doing it together and having an amazing environment in the building, we’ll all be just fine.”
