Colombian singer Shakira has been taken to hospital in Peru after experiencing abdominal issues, forcing her to cancel a concert. The Hips Don’t Lie star had arrived in Lima on Saturday for the first time in over a decade but was unable to perform due to the health issue.
Shakira posted a message on Instagram stating that she had been hospitalized and did not feel well enough to perform. She expressed sadness at missing the show, saying it would have been her first performance in Peru in years.
The singer is a trailblazer for Latin artists crossing over into the English-speaking market, but has faced controversy in recent years, including a tax fraud case where she paid a €7.5m fine to Spanish authorities.
Shakira’s tour is in support of her Grammy-winning album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, which explores her highly publicized split from Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué. She will perform again in Lima on Monday and then head to Colombia before the end of June as part of her tour.
