Shaolin Temple Abbot Under Investigation for Embezzlement and Misconduct

The 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple in central China’s Henan province has been rocked by an investigation into its head monk, Shi Yongxin. The abbot, who has led the temple since 1999, is being probed for embezzlement, “improper relationships with multiple women”, and “fathering illegitimate children”. Shi Yongxin’s ordination certificate has been stripped amid the probe, damaging the reputation of the Buddhist community.

Under his leadership, Shaolin Temple expanded globally, opening schools outside China and a travelling troupe of monks performing kung fu shows. However, allegations of corruption and misconduct surfaced in 2015, including claims that Shi Yongxin received gifts from companies and local governments.

The temple has faced criticism for its plans to build a $300m complex, which included a hotel, school, and golf course. Although some may view the temple’s activities as acceptable due to their focus on martial arts and spiritual life, authorities are taking a closer look at Shi Yongxin’s finances.

If found guilty of embezzlement and corruption, Shi Yongxin’s reputation among the Chinese public could be severely impacted.
