Shaquil Barrett Rejoins Buccaneers After Brief Retirement

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed linebacker Shaquil Barrett to their 53-man roster, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The team made the move official on Saturday morning after waiving Barrett from their reserve/retired list.

Barrett, 31, had been released by the Dolphins in free agency and announced his retirement just over a month later. However, he applied for reinstatement in November and was ultimately allowed to be waived. This cleared the path for him to sign with another team, and he has chosen to return to Tampa Bay.

A veteran linebacker, Barrett has played nine seasons in the NFL, earning two Pro Bowl selections during his time with the Buccaneers. He recorded a league-high 19.5 sacks in one of those campaigns. Before his brief retirement, Barrett had been playing for the Dolphins, but now he will join forces once again with the team that drafted him.

The Buccaneers have a must-win contest against the Panthers this Sunday and will have to decide whether to activate Barrett for the game. The timing of Barrett’s return is uncertain, given his recent brief stint away from football.
