A new study has identified 17 risk factors that people can address to reduce their risk of developing stroke, dementia, and late-life depression together. High blood pressure and severe kidney disease are among the top contributors to these health conditions.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have found that behavioural and lifestyle changes can significantly lower the risk of these diseases. They combined data from previous studies on risk factors associated with stroke, dementia, and depression to identify shared modifiable risk factors.
The study revealed that risk factors such as alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, sleep, stress, and social engagement are common to all three conditions. By addressing these risk factors, individuals can reduce their risk of developing more than one of these diseases simultaneously.
This research highlights the importance of preventive efforts in reducing the burden of age-related brain diseases. It also emphasizes that preventing disease is simple when considering the shared risk factors among common diseases.
