The classic video game series Shinobi is making a comeback with the release of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance on August 29 for PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch. Developed by a French studio known for Streets of Rage 4, the new game blends old-school action with modern animations and metroidvania-inspired exploration.
During a recent preview event, Joe Musashi, the franchise’s protagonist, was showcased in action. The combat feels smooth and impactful, with players able to chain together moves into powerful combos as they progress through the game. The addition of elemental spells called Ninpo, which can be upgraded using resources gathered from defeating enemies, adds a new layer of depth to the gameplay.
However, the game also requires flawless execution, pushing players to master mobility options such as double jumps, air dashes, and dodge-rolls to stay ahead of enemies. The levels are large and full of secrets, with upgrades available at a shop that sells new skills and Ninpo abilities.
While platforming challenges add variety to the gameplay, some sections can be visually overwhelming due to the game’s dynamic backgrounds. Nevertheless, the visuals are an asset, complementing the intricate action and design.
Overall, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is an exciting revival of a classic game that promises to deliver busy gaming summers and fall seasons with its slick new style and engaging gameplay.
